Evaluation:
After completing this unit, I am able to create, transform, edit and store images from different sources, such as cameras and the internet, focusing on digital techniques. After completing this unit I think I am able to choose images for specific purposes and audiences and evaluate the presentation of digitally edited images.
The formal assessment consisted of:
· Evidence of pre-manipulated images
· An exhibition of my completed work
· Feedback of completed productions from the audience
For this unit there were three briefs, as we had to take photographs and create images for three different purposes. We used the digital stills cameras and we were also allowed to find photographs from other sources. We created the final images using Adobe Photoshop. We had to take photographs ourself and had to find photographs which we can use to create final images for an exhibition which illustrates the relationships between the media industries and their audiences.
In total we created 18 images, 3 for each of the following media industries:
· Television
· Radio
· Cinema
· Print
· New Media
· Advertising
I think my final images illustrate the brief I was given because of the ideas, the images and also the editing was good which the audience really liked. Images were quite creative as I figured it out by looking at the questionnaire feedback which audience gave after they looked at the exhibition. Also all the images illustrate the relationship between the media industries and their audience. The exhibition of my all 18 and 6 images was creative and 17 people came to see that exhibition. From all 17 audiences about 15 of them said it on the questionnaire that the images are really creative and the editing is really good and they also said it goes really well with the title. But 2 of them didn’t really like the idea.
My strongest image was; all three images which were related to radio. The audience really liked radio images because they were much more creative than the other images. With an image of radio and loads of people are standing on the radio where the Arial should be, the background is also full with radios. The second radio image was; a big radio and a girl pressing the button of the radio. Third image was; Girl with radio ears and radio Arial on her head. So the audience found that idea really interesting. The way I used people rather than an Arial. Some of the audience found this idea funny as well as interesting.
From all 18 images the weakest image was the (Television) the one with the TV eyes because the audience didn’t really like it, they liked the idea but I think the editing and the background was not good as it should be. So number of people did not like the image. I personally think the same because of the bad editing and the colour scheme; also the background wasn’t good and it didn’t make the image eye-catching.
Editing images was a bit hard to do because I didn’t know how to use the tools properly such as I’ll give an example of television images because it took me ages to put TV on her eyes and then I put the programme on the TV. It was hard to balance them both; the same is true with the radio and New Media. Because in one image of radio, my idea was to put lots of small radios at the background so it was bit hard to put all of them on the whole background. It was hard to create them perfectly with the best editing so it can look real.
The technical quality of my completed images: the print quality was really good none of my image had bad print quality and so as all the audience said. Image resolution and the clarity were also perfect. The colour contrast, adjustment of the colours, brightness and the lighting all were really creative.
When I presented my exhibition to an audience, I think I got good feedback about my images. Some of them quite liked my ideas and they said images are really creative. Radio ears, Cinema, People standing on radio. All these ideas were fabulous from the audience’s point of view, because they got to see something new, funny and interesting. Audience liked our idea how played with the images and how we created them, such as; someone with radio ears, radio Arial on the head and people standing on the radio where the Arial supposed to be. Some people who didn’t like my idea just because they think I rushed on some images. Such as; 2 people said the idea of advertisement wasn’t really good and also the editing isn’t really creative and it rushed. But personally I don’t think I rushed in any of the images, because I didn’t do them just once I had to make changes over and over again so it took me more then one lesson to finish each final image completely. Overall Audience’s feedback was quite impressive for me because it was my first time to create the images and I never knew that some people would like my ideas this much.
We also created 6 other images which were People and their heroes:
The main idea was to take the photographs of our family or friends and ask them who their heroes are, such as actors, football player or a cartoon character. Then we had to find the pictures of their heroes from the internet and then create them. E.g. I took a picture of my sister Ishma and her hero is Upsy daisy who is her favourite cartoon character, then I found the image of Upsy daisy from the internet. I also used Upsy daisy’s images to use for the background after cropping, cut the bits I didn’t need. Ishma was wearing upsy daisy dress so when I created her image with her favourite cartoon character it was looking real that she is there standing with Upsy Daisy. I told her to give a wow expression so it can look like you are excited. When the final image was finished it was looking really creative. This final image was also one of the best image in audience’s point of view and mine also. It was quite colourful with the best editing.
I created all the images quite well but from the audience feedback there was one image which audience didn’t really like just because of the colour contrast and the lighting of the image. Also because I used images at the background for other 5 final images but I didn’t use them for this image. Urmila is a Bollywood actress, so audience didn’t know who Urmila Madonkar is until I’ll use her images from the movies. Also the image I took (shamim) was really light and the colour contrast wasn’t good as much as the image of her hero (Urmila Madonkar).
Other than that the rest of 5 images were really good. The print quality, image resolution, clarity and the lighting was perfect for the rest of the rest of the final images and the audience really liked them. The best thing audience liked in my images was, there was no pixilation. The images I saved from internet were also good quality of images, the print and the size was really good. All the images I saved were in large size. So the editing was correct and creative.
Overall I got good feedback from the audience and they liked the idea how I used my family and friends in the images and how well I did the editing. It looks real in their point of view. I also enjoyed doing this task because it was interesting and as I had lots of experience while creating the 18 images so I knew how to use all the tools and how edit them correctly.
Story illustration: We read the story Mr Love day’s Little Outing. We then were given a handout of the story laid out in book format with four blanks where illustrations would go. We had to take photographs and create final images to illustrate the story. We imported the final images into the layout on Quark Xpress to complete the full book. It was really important that the images we produced are best quality. There shouldn’t be any pixilation. We also used a range of techniques when producing the images, including cropping and resizing/scaling; colour adjustments; combining images from different sources; changing resolution; enhancements; multiple images; and adding effects.
I took 4 images, one was a bike in the middle of the road and it was the part of the story; a close-up of someone’s hand writing a letter; a picture of an old gate; and the last one was a close-up of someone’s eyes. All the 4 images were illustrating the story very well and I put them on the right page so while we read the story it actually makes sense. I also got experience of how to use Quark Express because the book was on Quark express and I had to put the images on the book.
I changed the title into white and made the images black & white. On the front page of the story I edited the picture of an old gate. I didn’t have to do much work on these images because I just took them to fit properly with the story. But as you can see they might don’t make sense when you look through the story but when you will read each page you will get the idea. Images have no close ending. The print quality; image resolution and clarity; lighting was perfect.
I had some weaknesses and strengths throughout this unit. E.g. weakness of my work was that I couldn’t finish my work on the final deadline. But the strengths were that I learnt new techniques; such as how to crop image on Photoshop, how to put to images together and also how to put different images or colours at the background. I became more confident because I took photographs of more than 1 people so I communicated with others while asking them to be in the image. I have learnt so many new skills about using Adobe Photoshop and Quark Express as I never used it before, how to create the image and how to link the images with media and their audiences.
After completing this unit I think I can do much better on Photoshop, I know how every tool works on it. I understood how to illustrate the images, how to make them look more creative and original. I think I developed my skills very well and also learnt many new things. I especially enjoyed creating the images of People and their heroes because I used my family members in my images with their heroes. There were some tasks in this unit when I struggled to finish my task because the ideas I had it was bit hard to create them into images and then make it as a final image. Overall I enjoyed doing this unit because it was fun to create images the way we want so basically I showed my ideas and skills throughout these images.
